An Assistance to Firefighter Grant worth
$34,807 to purchase a new set of self contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA),
replace old turnout gear, hoods, gloves and helmets is on its way to the
Arnoldsburg Volunteer Fire Department, according to Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito
(R-WV).
"This is a great example of your federal tax dollars coming back to
West Virginia to help secure a local community," said Capito.
It is part of an effort to make sure first responders have the
equipment and training they need to respond to a disaster or emergency.
Capito supported Arnoldsburgs grant application in a letter to the
Department of Homeland Security.
Capito said the Arnoldsburg VFD is a small, rural volunteer fire
department located in Calhoun County. Their coverage area
encompasses one hundred square miles and approximately two thousand people.
"This much needed grant will allow us to replace some outdated
equipment which will help keep our firefighters safe during an emergency,"
said Arnoldsburg Fire Chief Fred Waybright.
"We sure appreciate the help
Congresswoman Capito has given us with this grant," he said.
Diane Ludwig, Director of the Little Kanawha Area Development
Corporation who helped write the grant noted, "Shelley has worked
collaboratively with us and the fire department for the past two years to
help obtain these fire grants."
The Grantsville VFD will receive $94,000 toward the purchase of a new pumper truck.
