Gregory D. Oakes, 46, of Charleston, died Wednesday, May
9, 2001, due to injuries received in a truck accident on Route 16 at Orma,
Calhoun County.
He was born June 25, 1954, in Rosewell, N.M., son of the
late Melvin D. "Corky" and Janet Mae Adkins Oakes. He
was also preceded in death by his son, Derrick.
He was an employee of Dominion Gas Co., formerly
Hope Gas Co., and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was a loving and caring father.
He is survived by his wife, Janie Helmick Oakes; two daughters, Amanda Jane
and Hallie December; and a son, Dennis Gregory, all at home; maternal
grandmother, Maude Adkins; three sisters, Tondra Stutler of Chesapeake,
WV, Deborah Burch of Portland, Ore., and Beverly Calhoun of Poca, WV
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Bartlett Burdette Cox Funeral
Home with the Rev. David Wuletich, the Rev. Kenneth Cooper and the Rev.
Timothy Oakes officiating. Burial will follow in Elk Hills Memorial Gardens, Big
Chimney, WV
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
