One hundred years ago a Grantsville entrepreneur made an effort to start a Chinese laundry.
4/23/1901 -
D.E. Stutler has sold his parcel of land lying between High Street and Burrows run to Robert Geho for $80. The purchaser will at once begin the erection of a building on it, just across from the Baptist church, to be used as a laundry.
The intention is to put in a steam laundry soon, but for the present it will be run by Chinese. It is expected to have the laundry in operation by the middle of May. Thus the new enterprises come this way, and Grantsville will be a city before we know it.
Plans for Chinese Laundry Hit a Snag in 1901
7/16/1901 - Miles Geho's laundry building is nearing completion and will likely be in operation soon. Miles is experiencing some trouble in securing a Chinaman to run it for him, but we presume he will find one in due time.
Plans for Chinese Laundry Changed in 1901
7/23/1901 - Miles Geho has decided to put in a steam laundry here instead of a Chinese. He has purchased his machinery which will be here in a few days, and he hopes to have it in operation within the next month or so. Miles deserves a great deal of credit for his push and enterprise, as well as the liberal patronage of the entire surrounding country. His laundry will be a permanent and lasting improvement to the town.
Editor's Note: We do not know if Mr. Geho's laundry became a growing concern, or if he ever found a "Chinaman" to run it.
