BIG BEND MAN IN SERIOUS CONDITION FOLLOWING CRASH

(11/06/2004)
A Big Bend resident remains in serious condition following a car accident one week ago near Spencer.

Tony Scott Morris, 33, was described as "serious" by a CAMC spokesperson yesterday after his vehicle struck a tree and uprooted it. Morris was thrown from the car.

A passenger in his car, Brian Smith, 18, also of Big Bend, had been described in fair condition earlier this week, and has been released from CAMC.

Smith was pinned in the car and had to be extracted by the Spencer-Roane VFD.

The victims were flown by HealthNet to CAMC.

The accident happened on U.S. 33-119, the Arnoldsburg Road, about four miles east of Spencer.

Authorities said Morris' car left the highway and struck a tree 18" in diameter, uprooting it and then falling on top of the vehicle.

Trooper Fred Hammack indicated alcohol likely played a role in the crash.
