COMMISSION WILL UNDERWRITE WOOD FESTIVAL - 911 Center And Underwood Field Reports Given, Radio Equipment Bids Accepted

(11/02/2004)
The Calhoun County Wood Festival has a sponsor for next year.

The Calhoun Commission approved the festival's request to underwrite the 2005 event. Festival members John and Sue Oshoway said the costs of liability insurance for the three-day event have climbed to about $8,000, an amount the small organization is unable to fund.

The commission will underwrite the group for next year, following one of the festival's most successful events held last June.

The commission heard several reports on the progress of the new 911 center at Mt. Zion and accepted two bids for electronic equipment and two-way radios using Homeland Security funds.

The bids were approved from Connection Plus for $29,359 and $13,614 from Labtronics.

Commission President Larry McCallister said there is $14,000 left in a $65,000 account for partial completion of the 911 building.

County Clerk Richard Kirby said numerous items have been delegated regarding work to be done on the center. Additional funds are needed to make it operational.

The commission reviewed the status of pending improvements to Wayne Underwood Field, including a $28,000 asphalt walking trail and $7,000 for drainage, electrical and water improvements to the area.

Two committee appointments were made to the Minnora Community Center, Carol Sue Adkins and Heidi Allen. Lisa Laughlin was appointed to the Solid Waste Authority. Commissioner Bob Weaver was appointed to replace Larry McCallister to the LEPC Board.

Related to election items, commissioners were instructed to be at the County Clerk's office at 7 p.m. Tuesday with their keys to complete the testing procedure on the optical vote counting machine. They will canvass the election results at 9 a.m. on November 8.

The commission passed a resolution declaring America Recycles Day on November 15th.

Diane Ludwig of the LK Development Corporation said ten people attended a recent small business training at the Workforce Investment Board office in Grantsville.

Ludwig said she is working with the Arnoldsburg VFD to obtain a FEMA grant for equipment.

The commission voted to assist the Town of Grantsville, providing quarters for the town, pending a decision by town council. (SEE Hur Herald story)
