County Clerk Richard Kirby "prepares the machine"
Commissioner Rick Sampson (L) and Larry McCallister go through the check list
The optical voting machine was put to an accuracy test yesterday by Calhoun commissioners McCallister, Sampson and Weaver and County Clerk Richard Kirby.
The machine passed with flying colors.
County Clerk Kirby said "Actually, the machine is more accurate in counting than the human eye," indicating it proved itself against previous hand counts.
"Things are in pretty good shape for conducting the election," said Kirby. "Hopefully, there will be few problems."
The machine was being prepared for counting the ballots next Tuesday.
Access to the machine was secured under lock, with the three commissioners having to use each of their keys before the machine can be put in operation Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, there are two days left for pre-election voting at the clerk's office. The last day is Saturday, with the clerk's office open until 5 p.m.
A record number of voters will have used early voting to cast their ballot, said Kirby.
Polls will open at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday and close at 7:30 p.m.
