The Calhoun Commission has reduced the regional jail bill by $50,000,
using
funds from a real estate settlement with the Calhoun County Commission
on Aging.
The Commission voted unanimously to accept the CCCOA offer after
several years of
divided ownership of the Grantsville senior center.
The Commission sought legal counsel from Prosecuting Attorney Tony
Morgan and
approval was given for the transaction by the Circuit Judge.
The regional jail bill stood at $127,683 this week, prior to the
$50,000 payment.
Commission President Bob Weaver said "The Commissioners think it is a
fiscally
responsible step in attempting to keep the county afloat. We have made
a valiant
effort with the jail bill during some trying times."
The jail bill is still a thorn in the side of Calhoun County, which
suffers from static or
decreasing revenues.
The number of home confinements, according to Sheriff Allen Parsons,
is steadily on
the rise as the cost of housing prisoners is expected to increase a
few dollars from
the current $39.50 a day. |
