PROPER FOOT AND WOUND CARE FOR DIABETICS - MHHCC Support Group Meets Oct. 14

(10/11/2004)
The October meeting of the Diabetic Support Group looks to be very informative. Our speaker for the evening will be Bedelia Leinbach, Clinical Manager for the United Wound Care Clinic in Clarksburg.

Did you know that Diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic lower extremities amputations in the United States?

Unfortunately, it is very common for diabetics to develop neuropathy, or loss of feeling in their feet.

This lack of sensation can result in sores or open wounds that are not being detected as soon as they should. Without proper care, these wounds may cause someone to lose a foot or even part of their leg.

Some tips for proper foot care include:

Daily foot exams
Eliminating likely obstacles in your home (rugs, furniture)
Trim your toenails straight across
Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes Get regular exercise
Stop smoking>BR> Follow a reasonable diet and keep your diabetes under control

The proper maintenance of a wound can save your life, diabetic or not.

Bedelia will be available to answer questions following her presentation.

The meeting will be Thursday, October 14, 2004 at 6:00 pm.

The meeting has been moved to the cafeteria due to a conflict of scheduling.
