A recent production by the University of Wisconsin's Music and Dance Departments featured five Heartwood in the Hills
masks.
Heartwood Artistic Director Jude Binder worked with the University and Choral Director Dr. Bruce Gladstone and traveled to
Madison, Wisconsin in March with the masks, which were worn by University of Wisconsin performers in a production of
Gian Carlo
Menotti's "The Unicorn, The Gorgon and the Manticore".
The masks were originally made by Binder and Barbara Anderson for a 1990 collaboration by Heartwood and the Larry
Parson's
Chorale of "The Unicorn, The Gorgon and the Manticore". This original production was performed under the musical direction
of Dr.
Larry Parsons. The production was designed, staged and choreographed by Binder. The University of Wisconsin production
was
choreographed by Maureen Jansen of the University Department of Dance and was performed on April 22, 2001.
The masks will be returned to Heartwood in time for the Wood Festival Parade. The Unicorn mask will join a large collection
of
favorite masks, old and new, which have been created at Heartwood. They will be worn by students and alumni when
Heartwood
takes to the streets for its participation in the annual parade on Saturday, June 9. At the conclusion of the Wood Festival
Parade,
the Heartwood Masks will perform in front of the Calhoun County Courthouse and will then return for a second performance
shortly
after the conclusion of the parade.
