West Virginia residents have one of the nation's largest tax burdens, according to a study by the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation.
With the loss of population and thousands of jobs, the remaining citizens are being asked to ante up.
West Virginia had the eighth-highest state and local tax burden in the United States in 2002.
According to the calculations, West Virginia's tax burden was about $111 per one-thousand dollars of personal income.
At the top of the list was New York with almost 140 dollars, followed by Maine, Wyoming, Hawaii, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Minnesota and then West Virginia.
Tennessee had the lowest tax burden in the country at $83 per thousand.
The rest of the bottom ten included South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Florida.
