CALHOUN COUPLE CHARGED WITH 42 COUNTS OF ANIMAL CRUELTY

(08/21/2004)
A Russett man and his wife were charged with 42 counts of animal cruelty yesterday, according to Calhoun Sheriff Allen Parsons.

Steven "Chub" Cunningham and his wife were charged with abusing about ten dogs and two rabbits at their residence on Big Run Road.

Parsons said Cunningham and his wife left the area for several days, leaving the animals without food or water.

"They were biting at their cages with what energy they had left wanting water and food," said Parsons.

Parsons said he had seen over 100 cases of animal cruelty in his 16 years in law enforcement, stating this was one of the worst.

"I will arrest any person who does this kind of thing," he concluded.

He said the animals were "fostered out" to people in the community.

The couple were taken before magistrate Rick Postalwait in Grantsville where the misdemeanor charges were filed.
