WEAVER AIR FORCE TEACHER OF YEAR - Recognition In Okinawa

(04/27/2001)
Former Calhoun High School biology teacher Jim Weaver has been named Air Force Teacher of the Year in Okinawa, Japan. Weaver, the son of Betty Fern Weaver of Phillip's Run, has been teaching at Kadena Air Base for twelve years, after leaving Calhoun County.

The Keystone Chapter of the Air Force Association selected Weaver for the honor because of his commitment to the teaching of aerospace-concepts in his science classroom.

Weaver's classroom has focused on rocketry, while students learned concepts of trigonometry and physics. They collected data on the calculation of thrust, altitude and velocity of their model rockets. The school has started a rocket club.

He is a graduate of Glenville State College in 1974 with a degree in biology, and received a Master's Degree from West Virginia University in 1983. He is married to Takayo Nakashima, and they have an 11-year-old son Alex.

His daughter Jamie and son-in-law Jason Hickman reside in Summersville, South Carolina.

Jim's brother and sisters reside in the area. Martha Haymaker and Linda Shock live at Mt. Zion and his brother, David Weaver, resides on Phillip's Run. Sister Lora Sturm lives in Ripley.
