A Mingo County woman says their school board was trying to thwart the will of
the people on their last day in office.
Only minutes before the Mingo County Board of Education was to auction off
Varney Elementary School and Gilbert Elementary School on Wednesday
morning, Circuit Judge Michael Thornsbury issued an injunction to stop the
sale.
The sale of the schools would have set the stage for the consolidation of
Mingo County schools.
The current board, whose make-up has been changed by electing two
anti-consolidation members, was attempting to complete the deal prior to their
going out of office.
Mingo County residents "by the thousands" have been protesting the
consolidation of their schools, said Delbarton resident Rebecca Pruitt, who
requested the injunction.
A hearing on the injunction will be held on July 9th, after the complexion of the
school board takes place.
