A Roane County man was thrown from his Toyota pick-up truck after it rolled
over about three times last night about 11 p.m., sending him to Braxton General Hospital.
The truck came to rest on its side on the paved highway.
Chester W. Helmick of Newton, driver of the vehicle, was discovered over a
steep embankment beside Milo Road, about one mile from State Route Rt.
16.
Sheriff Allen Parsons said "The victim was very fortunate to have survived. He was thrown a
long way."
Helmick was reportedly suffering from head and chest injuries. He was
transported by Calhoun EMS to Gassaway after HealthNet was unable to
respond because of weather conditions.
A passenger in the Helmick truck was identified as Joshua Smith of Grannies
Creek. He was uninjured, having his seat belt attached.
Calhoun EMS dispatched two ambulances to the accident, along with the
Upper West Fork Volunteer Fire Department.
Sheriff Parsons is completing the investigation.
