DirecTV customers can now get the local TV channels starting today in many WV counties.
The new programming affects DirecTV customers in Boone, Braxton, Cabell, Calhoun, Clay, Jackson,
Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, Mingo, Nicholas, Putnam, Roane, Wayne and Wirt counties, 11
counties in Kentucky and seven in Ohio>
Existing customers must pay an additional $3 a month for NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox and PBS and local
affiliates.
That means customers with DirecTV's basic package of about 130 channels will pay $39.99 a month
instead of $36.99 a month, according to the company. There is a free preview starting today,
providing the customer has the upgraded equipment.
Dish Network already provides the local channels, but several customers have complained they have
had difficulty getting the upgraded equipment.
New customers will get new dishes, and can get the basic package with local channels for $29.99 for
the first six months if they order by July 17, according to DirecTV.
Access to local channels will likely cost some customers of TV cable outfits, but access is a real
enticement for people living in rural areas who have poor signals.
The cost of DirecTV and Dish service is often less than many cable operations.
