"It can be done!" said Keith Tyler, a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. " You must keep your dreams and goals - and work for them."
Tyler, a college All-American, spoke at the Calhoun All-Sports Banquet Friday evening, sharing his story of "staying on course" from growing up in a poor family in Charleston to becoming one of the state's outstanding basketball players.
"I loved basketball and I kept doing what it took to become a good basketball player," he said. Tyler, who is now a minister, gave compelling reasons why athletes who want to be successful should avoid alcohol and drugs.
Tyler was introduced by MC Bob Bailey, who kept the three-hour event moving along, including a video of the winning moments of the Oak Hill-Calhoun basketball game that led to the team playing for the state championship.
"There have been a lot of accomplishments and lots of records by Calhoun students," said Bailey. "It has been a great year."
Parents, coaches and local athletes enjoyed a banquet, followed by the presentation of awards and recognition to those who have contributed to the school's sports programs.
The most "prestigious" awards, Lady Red Devil and the Wayne Underwood Award, went to Tiffany Hall and Eric Metz, both selected by the student body.
The two Hall of Fame awards went to champion wrestler Justin Ashley and champion basketball player Marcus Davis, in recognition of their outstanding achievements. Their pictures will be hung in the Hall of Fame at Calhoun Middle-High School.
Ryan "Goob" Fitzwater was given a special courageous student award for his "courage over adversity," rebounding from a critical accident to play sports at Calhoun High.
Coach and Athletic Director Tim Davis said "Calhoun High School experienced boundless gifts in their sports programs this past year," and expressed special thanks to parents and the school's supporters for an "enormous contribution."
