SULLIVAN WILL PLAY IN WVU MARCHING BAND - First Calhoun Student Accepted In 30 Years

(05/02/2004)

Susan Sullivan, the daughter of Jim and Colleen Sullivan of Smithville, a senior at Calhoun County High School, has been accepted into the West Virginia University Mountaineer Marching Band, under the direction of John Hendricks III and Assistant Director Jay Drury. She has been a member of the Calhoun County Marching Band for six years; she played trombone for eight years and was the 2003-2004 Field Commander.

Auditions were held Saturday, April 17th at the Creative Arts Center on the Evansdale Campus of WVU. Susan was required to know 4 scales (Bb, Eb, Ab, and F), play a solo of her choice, play Hail West Virginia and Camino Real, then sight read a small selection from Malaga. She auditioned to Nikki Gross, the Graduate Assistant to Mr. Hendricks. Band camp for the Pride of West Virginia will be held from Monday, August 16th through Saturday, August 21st.

The band performs for all home football games as well as one or two away games each season. Other performances include area exhibition performances, the WVU Homecoming parade, the annual "KeyNotes" performances, and hopefully a Bowl game. Over the past fifteen years, the band has performed in several major cities throughout the U.S. including Jacksonville, FL; Charlotte, NC; Nashville, TN; Tucson, AZ; Fort Lauderdale, FL; New York City, NY; New Orleans, LA; Phoenix, AZ; El Paso, TX; Houston, TX; and Washington, D.C. Students will receive the 2004 performance schedule during the summer months.

The WVU Band is noted for its high energy performances, outstanding musical arrangements, and exciting visual presentations. The band basically marches "corps" style shows with music representing a wide spectrum. Over the past several years, the band has performed music from Broadway musicals, jazz and classical composers, movie blockbusters, "big band" groups, and pop stars, as well as patriotic music and the traditional WVU fight songs.

During the season, the band will perform their traditional pre-game show at every performance as well as approximately four to five different halftime shows (with a total of ten to fifteen halftime selections).

Susan is the first Calhoun student to be accepted into the Mountaineer Marching band in 30 years.
