Spc. Perkins said this was home part of the time

Spc. Phillip Perkins of Millstone came back to his church family yesterday at Mt. Zion United Methodist, after returning to the US after a year in Iraq.
The church folks put on a covered dish dinner yesterday afternoon.
The area where the 1092nd Engineers were stationed has become a hot bed of activity in the past few days, prompting Phillip to say "We got out of there in the nick of time."
Maybe it was the uttering of prayer every week at Mt. Zion for his safe return.
Philip said about a dozen Calhoun men are members of the 1092nd.
"There were a few times I was scared," he said. "They told us to be friendly to the civilians, but at the same time a few of them were hostile. You couldn't tell the difference.
He said part of the year seemed to go slowly, but his squad kept busy on projects, some military and some related to helping the Iraqi army become more stable. "There were times when we entered buildings, looking for weapons or hostile civilians," he said.
"I'm sure glad to be home," he concluded, hugging his girlfriend Heather Weaver. |
