COMMISSION SEEKS GRANT FUNDS FOR ELEVATOR - Architect Hired For Courthouse Improvement Grants

The Calhoun Commission approved the renewal of a Small Cities Block Grant application to install an elevator in the county courthouse.

The Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council will attempt to receive funding again this year. The installation of the elevator is a requirement of the American Disabilities Act, and is projected to cost over $200,000.

The commission hired Wheeling architectural firm Cerrone Associates to develop grant proposals for courthouse improvements which are offered by the State of West Virginia.

Grant money is being made available to update county courthouses around the state. The commission initially wanted to replace the original windows, but because the building uses window air conditioners, the first application will seek air conditioning.

Donna Jordan, representing the Minnora Community Center, spoke to the commission regarding the proposed use of center real estate for a new senior citizens center for southern Calhoun. Commission President Larry McCallister said the commission has not received a proposal from the Building Commission.(See earlier news story)

The commission discussed primary election procedures and dates. Clerk Richard Kirby said poll worker training will be held April 19 and early voting will start on April 21. The commission will test the counting equipment on May 4.

The architect drawings for a proposed E-911 building have yet to be received by the commission. The drawings of the small block building will be used to advertise for bids.

Pleasant Hill PSD board member Terry Dye resigned, and the commission appointed Perry Dye to replace him.

Members of the LK Parkway Authority were re-appointed, Robert Bonar, Dan McDonald and Danny Law.

Commissioner Larry McCallister will attend a Trail Grant informational meeting on April 17th.

Diane Ludwig presented current information regarding the LK Development Corporation. The commission approved a resolution of cooperation related to being a Certified Development Community.

Jason Nettles was appointed to the Blue-Gray Intermodal road group, on which Commissioner Weaver also serves.

Commissioner Bob Weaver attended a Government Leadership Academy in Morgantown last weekend, with one of the issues related to sustaining local communities.

The commission passed a resolution for Fair Housing Month.

Commissioners approved minutes from meetings held on March 1, 8, 12, 18 and 23.

They also reviewed the current budget and made budget revisions.

The commission will meet briefly on April 20 to "lay the levy," a legal formality.
