CLAY MOTHER AND CHILD'S FUNERAL TODAY - Died After Tuesday Accident

Yesterday morning a split second error in driving on a rain soaked road took the life of Cathy Fitzwater Adkins and her 3 year old daughter Rachel. Both young and pretty and with bright futures. The news saddened our community and gave many a reason to pause and rethink their day. Such stories aren't fun.

Funeral services are scheduled today for a Clay County woman and her daughter, killed in an auto accident on rain-slick Route 4.

Kathryn Dawn Adkins, 24, and her daughter, Rachel Elizabeth Adkins, 3, of Maysel died Tuesday multiple injuries.

Kathryn was born August 5, 1979, in Charleston, daughter of Danny and Dawn Fitzwater of Maysel. She was a graduate of Clay County High School, a legal assistant for Bowles, Rice, McDavid, Graff and Love and a member of Fairview Baptist Temple.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Brien Adkins of Maysel; sisters, Shawna Ann Taylor and husband, Juston, and Angela Brooke Fitzwater and fiancé, Gregory Brown, all of Maysel; sister-in-law, Amy Legg of Dog Run; brother-in-law, Kevin Adkins of Dog Run; mother- and father-in-law, Donvil and Dorma Adkins of Dog Run; paternal grandparents, Lambert and Wilma Fitzwater of Lizemores.

Also maternal step-grandfather, Don Davisson of Orrville, Ohio; nieces, Kaitlyn Legg, Tasha Adkins, Kelsie Adkins and Kayla Adkins; and nephews, Jared Legg and Aiden Joel Taylor. Rachel was born Nov. 20, 2000. She is survived by her father, Brien; her maternal grandparents, Danny and Dawn Fitzwater; her paternal grandparents, Donvil and Dorma Adkins; paternal great-grandparents, Kenneth and Maxine O'Brien of Maysel, Tressie Adkins of Dog Run; maternal great-grandparents, Lambert and Wilma Fitzwater; and maternal step-grandfather, Don Davisson.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, April 2, at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay, with Minister John Day officiating. Burial will follow in Mullins Cemetery, Maysel. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
