SPENCER RIDING HIGH WITH $250,000 IN GRANTS

(04/01/2004)
The City of Spencer got over $250,000 in grants this week, compliments of Gov. Bob Wise.

Wise spent nearly all day Monday in visiting the town and issuing grants to several projects.

Spencer Mayor Terry Williams was delighted, saying "It's been a good day for the town."

Williams is still riding high over a new city building he acquired through an arrangement with the West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

Awards totaling $132,000 will be used for Phase III of the city's downtown street improvement project.

The governor made the presentations Monday evening at a dinner meeting of the Roane Chamber of Commerce, where he was keynote speaker.

Wise also presented $120,000 to the Roane Committee on Aging.

The grant will be used to install heating and air conditioning in the part of the senior center, the former Spencer Grade School.

Over 125 people turned out to hear the governor speak at the chamber dinner.
