ARRESTS MADE IN STATE POLICE SIGN THEFT - Eighteen-Year-Old Spencer Man Charged

(03/31/2004)
Eighteen-year-old James Adkins of Spencer is one of two individuals charged in the stealing of the West Virginia State Police detachment signs in Spencer.

Adkins and 19-year-old Carl Santamaria of Martinsburg were arraigned yesterday in Roane County Magistrate Court.

The West Virginia Wesleyan College students have been charged with petit larceny, according to Trooper Fred Hammack.

Hammack says the signs were found in the students' dorm rooms. He would not say what led police to the signs, which had not been replaced since they were taken during the county's Black Walnut Festival last October.

They are being returned to the local barracks on Bower's Hill along US 33 east of Spencer.

The Grantsville detachment signs was stolen last year, with the individuals arrested and the sign returned.
