Cynthia Smell, addressing liaison, spoke to county officials about E-911
Calhoun's E-911 mapping and addressing is moving forward, according to the
county's 911 director Joe Tanner. "The aerial photography and mapping should
be completed by the end of June," he said.
Cynthia Smell, representing the statewide Mapping and Addressing Board, told
Tanner and members of the County Commission yesterday that 400,000 new
E-911 addresses would be assigned to residences in the state.
Smell said field collectors for E-911 addressing will be in the county sometime
during the next year. Residents will receive information in the mail, requesting
their assistance with the project.
"Field Collectors will have name tags and ID cards and will be traveling in a
clearly marked van," she said.
The E-911 project will be completed in all 55 counties by 2007, but it is likely
Calhoun's completion will be sooner since some of the work is already done.
Tanner said at least one public meeting will be held prior to the addressing
phase, "Just so people will know what is going on."
Calhoun's E-911 system already has most of the electronics to make it
operational.
"The enhanced system allows dispatchers to quickly locate the caller. A map
comes up on a screen pin-pointing their location along with the best routing to
the area where there is a problem," Tanner said.
The statewide mapping and addressing is dedicated to having a uniform system
in the state.
Attending yesterday's meeting, in addition to Tanner - Commissioners McCallister,
Sampson and Weaver, County Clerk Richard Kirby, 911 supervisor Burl
Postalwait, Assessor Jason Nettles, former 911 director Barry Pitts and
Magistrate Rick Postalwait.
