HERE COMES SUDDEN OAK DEATH

(03/25/2004)
If you don't have enough to worry about, here comes Sudden Oak Death.

State Agriculture Commissioner Gus Douglas has imposed a quarantine on nursery products from the state of California.

Traces of the dreaded disease were noticed at 14 West Virginia nurseries. The locations include Malden, Talcott, Vienna, Shepherdstown, Beckley, Charleston, Bridgeport, Huntington, Fairmont, Inwood and one in Mason County.

The Sudden Oak Death fungus is likely being carried on some plants now arriving at state nurseries for spring planting.

The fungus can cause cankers on the trees and potentially kill live oaks in two to three years.
