Hazel Virginia Nicholas Kelley, 88, formerly of Belpre, Ohio and presently a resident of Eagle Pointe Nursing Home, Parkersburg, was called to her heavenly home by her Savior and Lord on Sunday, March 21, 2004, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, West Virginia.
Hazel was born October 17, 1915, at Trace Forks, Gilmer County, WV. She was the daughter of the late Charles McCaskey Nicholas and Alta Olive Stidd. Her husband, Edward Woodrow Kelley of Belpre, preceded her in death on November 29, 2001.
Surviving are their two daughters, Delilah L. Potter and her husband, Edward, of Little Hocking, Ohio and Sharon M. Phillips and her husband, Keith, of Parkersburg; nine grandchildren, Regina L. Potter, Diana L. Roach, Edward T. Potter Jr., Paula K. Balderson, Michael S. Potter, Karissa M. Potter, Doug Carpenter, Craig Carpenter and Kellie D. Phillips; nine great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
Hazel was the last living member of six brothers and four sisters in the Nicholas Family, following the death of her oldest brother, Ralph "Swifty" Nicholas of Grantsville, WV, in December of 1996, Denver "Pete" Nicholas, Pearl Rothwell, Hoy Nicholas, Linda Dora Beall, Hall O. Nicholas, Baby Brother, Goldie Nicholas, Charlie McCaskey Nicholas and Wyoma Mullikan.
She was a Baptist by faith and loved playing with her grandchildren. She enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens. She was a homemaker and sometimes worked as a seamstress and housekeeper for friends and relatives.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, WV, with her nephew, the Rev. Robert Nichols, officiating. Burial will follow at the Nobe Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
