GRANTSVILLE CURTAILS TRASH PICK-UP - Stevens Appointed To Council, Funds Raised Locally For New Town Hall

The Grantsville Town Council has voted to curtail garbage pick-up to residents living outside the town, according to the minutes of the May 1st meeting. Trash service will no longer be provided to any party who lives more than one mile from the town limits.

The council approved the appointment of a former Grantsville Mayor and Councilwoman JoAnn Stevens to fill the vacancy left by Mike Wilson.

Jim Morris, a member of the Municipal Building Committee, according to the minutes, gave a report that the Town of Grantsville is not required to have a 501-C tax exemption.

Morris said a bank account has been established for the town hall fund and the committee on Plans and Estimates is trying to get an estimate from an architectural/engineering firm and a request has been made for $15,000 to cover such work from the legislatures Budget Digest.

Morris reported Tim Meeks, a specialist with the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council, reported no funds are available for such building projects.

Jim Morford reported no loans were available for such projects, although Nancy Bremer has sent letters to Congressman Mollohan and Shelly Moore Capito, asking them for any help they might give.

Mayor Blankenship reported the landfill at Parkersburg accepts one pick-up load of trash on the second Saturday of every month, free of charge.

Recorder Phyllis Maze requested a budget revision to the town budget, which was approved.

Approval was given to John Oshoway to hold an Easter Egg Hunt at the municipal park.

Cheryl Davis thanked the town for fixing a water leak by her residence. Judy Bowman thanked the town for notifying her of a water leak. Gaylen Duskey thanked the town for ticketing a frequent speeder. Duke Bowman spoke on town ordinances and the creation of a town court. Mike Wilson spoke about the draw-backs and associated costs of having a town court.

In addition to the presence of Mayor Neil Blankenship and Recorder Phyllis Maze, three council members were present, Loretta Stevens, Charles Whipkey and Keith Smith.
