WEST SIDE CHARLESTON KILLED IN APARTMENT - A West Side Charleston man
described by neighbors as "nice" was fatally shot yesterday afternoon in his
basement apartment. He was Harry "Tom" Christian, 62. Police say Christian was
shot by Robert Eric "Shorty" Haines, 25, of Charleston, who is considered armed
and dangerous. Authorities want help from the public to locate the suspect.
CHARLESTON MALL EMPLOYEE GUNNED DOWN - Charleston Police say they are
investigating the death of a Kanawha Mall employee who was shot at the
shopping center's loading docks. James Workman, 28, of Cedar Grove was shot at
about 8:20 last night. He stumbled back inside the mall and collapsed in the food
court and died. Before dying he told police he'd been shot by a man driving a
dark-colored sedan, possibly a Dodge Intrepid.
CHARLESTON MAN KILLS DO-GOODER - A Charleston man has pleaded guilty to
second-degree murder in a 2003 bar shooting. Charles Lamont Gray, 28, entered
his plea today in Kanawha County. Gray will serve 15 years in prison for the April
16th death of 44-year-old Jed Smith of Rand. Smith was being a "do-gooder" and
tried to break up a fight at Sam's Uptown Cafe when he was killed.
HUNTINGTON HOMELESS MAN BEATEN TO DEATH - A Huntington man has been
sentenced to life in prison without parole for the June 2002 beating death of a
homeless man. Eighteen-year-old Michael Day beat the homeless man with sticks,
boards and other items near a campsite along the Ohio River.
HUNTINGTON MAN MURDERS NEIGHBOR - Forty-nine-year-old John Lee Moore was
arrested yesterday morning and charged with first-degree murder and obstruction
in the death of 36-year-old Melvin Douglas Patterson. Patterson was found dead in
the stairwell of an apartment building where both he and Moore lived.
