I-79 SCHEDULED TO OPEN - Sunday HazMat Wreck Closes 20-Mile Stretch

(02/23/2004)
I-79 is expected to be open by midnight Sunday after a tanker truck wrecked at Clendenin.

A 20-mile stretch of Interstate 79 was closed most of Sunday after the crash.

The driver was carrying a tanker full of acid to Philadelphia when it wrecked on the northbound shoulder. No acid spilled from the truck. The chemical can be hazardous if it reacts with water or water vapor in the air.

The highway between the Clendenin and the Wallback has been closed and traffic was being re-routed on State Route 4.

Workers transferred the chemical to another truck.
