The long proposed Normatown-Stumptown water extension, which would also
serve the Cedar Creek area, is short on sign-ups needed to make the project
go.
The Gilmer PSD said last week 94 of the needed 167 customers have signed for
water.
The $2.9 million, 22 mile extension requires a $100 hookup fee. The PSD said
financial help is available if a customer does not have the fee.
The lack of interested parties, according to PSD members, may be linked to a
record amount of rainfall in 2003 which consistently replenished well water.
Otherwise, many area residents are required to purchase drinking water at
grocery stores or haul water to their cisterns.
Residents of the Normantown area have been very reluctant to sign.
While Gilmer PSD board members have been optimistic, the water extension
could be in trouble.
