The West Virginia Environmental Council has issued an alert that the
pending
ATV legislation is headed down the wrong road.
The Council says the bill does not regulate the use of
these machines on public lands, such as state parks and state forests, and
allows their use on
thousands of miles of paved roads.
The Senate Transportation Committee will take up ATV
today.
The Council says the manufacturers of ATVs say the recreational vehicles were
never meant to be ridden on paved roads, and are considered unsafe.
The Council said safety standards set by the manufacturer say that double riding
on ATVs creates a critical safety hazard.
