The Calhoun Commission is moving ahead toward constructing a new 911 center
on the Mt. Zion campus of Calhoun Middle/High School.
Bids are being sought for labor and materials to construct a 38' x 40' block
building adjacent the school bus garage behind the school. (See public notice on
this project )
"This new facility will meet the criteria for a 911 center," said 911 Director Joe
Tanner.
The Calhoun Board of Education approved a recommendation Tuesday by
Superintendent Ron Blankenship to give the Calhoun Commission a 99 year lease
on the property for the new center.
The board unanimously approved to allow the land to be used for the center.
The site was recommended by the 911 Advisory Board last month, while the
commission took action to stabilize the 911 budget.
The current building which houses Calhoun Control does not meet safety
standards or codes, according to Tanner.
"The new communications center will be in the geographic center of the county,"
said Tanner.
Calhoun's emergency ambulance service will remain, at least temporarily, at the
current Mt. Zion site, according to Josh Johnson, EMS Director. Johnson said the
building needs "some critical work" if it is to continue housing the ambulance
operation.
