GRAND JURY RETURNS 18 INDICTMENTS - Stutler Charged With Attempted Murder, No Indictment In Groves-Hicks Double Murder

A near record number of indictments were returned Tuesday and Wednesday by a grand jury of the Calhoun Circuit Court. Calhoun prosecutor Matthew Minney presented eighteen cases and received eighteen indictments before Judge David Nibert.

Sixty-seven-year-old Harold Lloyd Stutler of Creston was indicted on one count of malicious assault and one count for the attempted murder of Creston resident Richard Starcher.

Stutler was charged after an ambush-like shooting on the remote Ace Haney Hill last August, firing his weapon three or four times at Starcher as he passed in his truck. Starcher received some injuries from the blasts and was taken to the hospital.

Stutler, who is Starcher's brother-in-law, had been in a family dispute over property rights on Little Creek for over a year, according to a family spokesperson.

Stutler is a well known Calhoun hunter, fisherman, trapper and herb digger. He has operated a root buying business at his residence for many years. He has been free on $100,000 bond.

No indictment was returned in the Groves-Hicks double murder case. Prosecuting attorney Matthew Minney said the case is still under investigation. Bobby Shamblin, who was one of the parties charged in the case, is to appear on May 13th.

Two Mount Zion men were charged with the sexual abuse of a child. Brandon Rose,19 of Mt. Zion, was charged with one count of sexual abuse in the first degree. The other man, Matthew Verbus, 32, was charged with nine counts of sexual abuse in the first degree.

John M. Richards, 39 of Grantsville, was charged with three counts of receiving stolen property. In another case against Richards, he has reportedly filed a second appeal with the West Virginia Supreme Court against his extradition to Washington County, Ohio. Ohio authorities have charged Richards with a sexual offense against two women at a Reno, Ohio car wash.

Two Grantsville men were indicted for failure to register as sex offenders, John B. Shock, Jr. and Bernard Smith, 47, in addition to Linda Lou Hughes, 52, of Chloe, who was charged with five counts for failure to register as a sexual offender.

George Duskey, 27 of Grantsville, was indicted on one count breaking and entering and one count petit larceny.

Jeremy Collins, 21 of Grantsville, was indicted on four counts forgery, four counts uttering.

Joshua Bohn, 21 of Grantsville, was indicted on two counts sexual assault in the third degree.

William Bohn, 20, of Grantsville was indicted on one count possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.

Roger Hanna, 42, of Charleston, was indicted on one count nighttime burglary, one count grand larceny, one count conspiracy to commit nighttime burglary.

George D. Hanna, 41, no address, was indicted on one count nighttime burglary, one count grand larceny, one count conspiracy to commit nighttime burglary.

John G. Arthur, 19 of Big Springs, indicted on one count grand larceny, one count breaking and entering an automobile, three counts breaking and entering, one count conspiracy to commit breaking and entering, one count petit larceny.

Christina Blake, 27, of Grantsville, indicted on one count welfare fraud.

Carolyn Summers, 45 of Grantsville, indicted on one count welfare fraud. (This is not Carol A. Summers, 47 of Sand Ridge.)

Sharon L. Smith, 50 of Big Bend, indicated on one count welfare fraud.

Carl D. Groves, 19, of Munday, indicted on two counts of breaking and entering, one count conspiracy to commit breaking and entering
