Kirby demonstrates quick access to voter lists
A new statewide voter registration system was activated today in West Virginia, according to Calhoun County Clerk
Richard Kirby. "It has been a major job for county clerks and their staffs," he said. "There are some bugs in in, but it is
up and running."
The activation brings the state into compliance with the Help America Vote Act passed by Congress. West Virginia is
one of only ten states bringing the new system together on time.
The biggest attraction of the new system will come when someone registers to vote in a particular county, said Kirby. It
will tell the County Clerk if the person is already registered in another county.
The federal government wants to reduce voter fraud.
In some voting districts or counties, voter registration lists have been closely held, sometimes with multiple names or names of
deceased persons.
The statewide system puts new computers and equipment in each county clerk's office throughout the state using $5
million in federal dollars.
"It has been a huge feat," said Kirby.
