CHRISTMAS WEEK DEER SEASON KICKS OFF MONDAY

(12/20/2003)
This year's family antler-less deer season will begin Monday -- the first day of winter.

Division of Natural Resources' Wildlife Chief Curtis Taylor says the agency has heard nothing but good things about last year's family hunt.

He says the season gives families an opportunity to spend time together, which lasts through Christmas eve and Christmas day.

The season consists of two parts -- a two-day hunt open to young people ages ten to 14, and a four-day hunt open to all hunters who haven't yet filled their antler-less-deer tags.

Both hunts will be restricted to private lands, where DNR officials hope to reduce white-tail herds by killing more antler-less deer than antlered bucks.

Last year's total kill for the family season was nearly 14,500.
