MEAD WESTVACO WILL TRIM 1000 EMPLOYEES

(12/19/2003)
Connecticut based Mead-Westvaco Corporation is planning to eliminate about one thousand jobs and close facilities next year as part of a 500 million-dollar program to improve earnings and cash flow.

The company is one of the regions largest landowners.

They aren't saying where the job cuts and facility closures will occur.

They say the reductions will take place across all corporate and business units.

The company's total work force is 30,000.

Mead-Westvaco has extensive timber holdings in West Virginia and operates a plant in Luke, Maryland, near Piedmont, West Virginia.
