The 2004 primary election is a few short months away, with all incumbents presently holding office in Calhoun indicating they are going to seek re-election.
At least four newcomers have gone on record saying they will be running for the public offices, all four years terms.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Carl Ballengee (Democrat), a career law enforcement officer with 19 years experience, has announced he will be running for Sheriff, filling a position vacant after Sheriff Allen Parsons completes an eight year term. "I feel my law
enforcement record with the public speaks for itself, and my knowledge of the county
and its citizens."
Former Grantsville policeman and current Chief Deputy of the Roane County Sheriff's Department Jeff Smith (Democrat) is also seeking the Calhoun sheriff's position. "Through my training and experience I feel I have a lot to offer the community. I feel there is no better place, or no better people, than here in Calhoun County," said Smith.
Prosecuting Attorney Matt Minney, a former Supreme Court associate (Democrat)
will
be running for the position to which he was appointed after the resignation of Tony
Morgan. Minney said he would like to continue working on the numerous important
cases that are currently under
investigation. "I believe that I apply the law fairly and evenly. I have made
Calhoun County my home, and I have a personal
interest in seeing that everyone here is safe and secure in their homes," he
said.
Newspaper editor Gaylen Duskey (Republican) is the only
candidate so far with an opponent, Democrat Assessor Jason Nettles. "I'm really interested
in the job," he said, "and have a lifetime of qualifications for it."
