HUNTERS HIT THE WOODS - First Day Buck Kill 322, Will 2008 Record Be Broken?

Hunters hit the Calhoun woods Monday, looking for their trophy buck.

Monday evening, six check stations reported 322 bucks killed, 45 doe.

The 2008 buck kill was a five-year record in Calhoun.

Holbert's Store (Big Bend) reported 43 buck, 9 doe, with Randy Schrader of Creston killing an 11-point, three 10-points were checked.

Speedy Mart (Arnoldsburg) reported 47 buck, 6 doe, with Daniel Hudson, IV checking a 14-point, four 10-points were checked.

Pit Stop (Mt. Zion) checked 21 buck, 7 doe, with Sherry Whytsell and Jeremy Conley both checking 9-pointers.

Cha-Tis (Grantsville) checked 26 buck, 2 doe, Sean Wiles checked a 12-pointer.

Nelly's (Minnora) checked 46 buck, 2 doe, Matthew McCumbers killed an 11-pointer, two 10's and three 9's were checked.

Parsons One-Stop (Pleasant Hill) checked 82 buck and 14 doe.

Siers Exxon (Stumptown) checked 47 buck, 3 doe, with a 9-pointer the largest.

Last year, Calhoun's buck deer harvest set a record high for the past five years, according to WVDNR.

The 2008 buck kill was 1,269.

The Division of Natural Resources expects 280,000 licensed hunters will hit the woods this season, helping to fuel an annual economic boost of about $233 million.

Each hunter can bag two bucks over the next two weeks.

Division of Natural Resources say a 73-year-old Morgan County man died of a heart attack while hunting, a Berkley Springs man was injured in a fall from a tree stand.
