FRUITS OF THY LABOR - The Honoring Of Work

(09/04/2017)

Today we are reminded of our families, our community members and the multitudes of our great society who contribute to our well-being each day by the labor of their minds and bodies.

We honor those in Calhoun County, most who work for sub-standard wages, most of whose benefits have diminished, because of the poor economy and those who drive a hundred miles or more a day "to make it."

Most of those blue-collar jobs which once offered opportunity in the region are gone, globalized, causing residents to drive even further for a job.

We honor their efforts to overcome the high cost of gasoline and energy and food prices that have dramatically jumped.

We are reminded of a basic belief that our society crumbles when government and the marketplace fail to offer the opportunity of meaningful work.

Further disturbing is the distribution of wealth in the USA, with about 1% holding about 99% of the wealth, and middle class income essentially stagnant since 1990, or before.
