GED CLASSES - GED classes are available once again in both Gilmer and Calhoun counties. Calhoun County classes will be held at the Career Center on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11:00 to 3:00. Gilmer County classes will be held at St. Marks Church on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:30. (St. Marks is located one mile from Glenville, across the street from the new fire station.) Due to changes in the GED program, the GED test is now free. However, candidates must first pass an OPT Practice Test prior to taking the full-length GED test. If you cannot attend a GED class to do this, please call 304-354-6151 and we will schedule a time for you to take the practice test.

BE A BAND BOOSTER SPONSOR - The CCMHS Band Booster's are looking for volunteers to work the booth at the following home games: September 10th and 24th; October 1st, 15th and 29th. WASH-WAX-DETAIL FUNDRAISER - The SkillsUSA club at Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center will be washing, waxing, and detailing automobiles for a fundraiser to send students to Skills competition for the upcoming year. The price is $25 for wash, $25 for a wax, or $25 for a inside detail ($75 for a complete wash, wax, and inside detail.) For appointments please call (304)354-6151.

NEW ZUMBA FITNESS CLASSES OFFERED - (e. 9/15/10) Lisa Walker instructor for ZUMBA®fitness has added classes to the regular line-up offered at Calhoun County Park's Herbert Smith Community Building. The new schedule includes Monday's at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Call Lisa at 304-354-0412 for more information.

CALHOUN HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING - The Society will meet Thursday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. at Heritage Village for their regular monthly meeting. Members are encouraged to come early if possible to help prepare the village for Calhoun Days.

CCCOA FITNESS CENTER OPEN - The CCCOA Fitness Center, at the Grantsville Senior Center is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-7 p.m. Cost is $2 a session or $15 a month.

CALHOUN DAYS BEGIN- September 10th and 11th at Calhoun County Park, free admission, reenactment of the Battle of Sycamore, Civil War encampments, cornhole tourney, bluegrass and country music, vendors-crafters, tours of Heritage Village, and many other events. FAMILY HISTORY CENTER CLOSED - The Calhoun Historical Society's Family History Center Museum in Grantsville will not be open Friday, Sept. 11. Historical Society members will be participating in Calhoun Days at Calhoun Park. Heritage Village will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday for tours, starting around 11:00 and closing in late afternoon. Members will be wearing period costumes. Apple butter will be made by Jim McCormick in the village on Saturday. New items for sale include straw hats of various styles.

FALL POTTERY CLASS BEGINS - Pottery classes will be held at the Grantsville Senior Center on Wednesdays, September 15, 22, and 29 from 10-11 a.m. Plan to attend all sessions fall pottery project. HENSLEY REUNION - In honor of Aaron (born 1806) and Nancy (King) Hensley and descendants, a family reunion is planned for Saturday, October 2, 2010, beginning at noon at the Big Otter Community Center, located on Rt 16, approximately 2 miles south of Rt 79 near Ivydale. After the death of Nancy, Aaron married Mary (Arnold) Knotts, widow of Joseph Knotts in 1857. Please bring a covered dish; eating utensils and beverages will be provided. We welcome and encourage guests to bring old photos, family relics, and family stories to share. Genealogical information will be made available to those interested. WIRT COUNTY FFA BBQ - The Wirt County Future Farmers of America will have a Beef BBQ Sunday, October 3rd at Wirt County High School cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Funds raised will go to pay kids way to the national FFA convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.

FREE HUNTERS EDUCATION CLASSES - The Division of Natural Resources will be giving free Hunter's Education Classes in Calhoun County at the Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center. Class will be held on October 5, 7 and 8 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. each evening. Students are required to attend all three nights to complete the course and receive their card.
